When working with the VITA In-Ceram system, the master model is duplicated using standard methods and the impression is cast with a special plaster. The plaster model is removed from the impression and an extremely fine-grained ceramic oxide, referred to as the "powder slip", is brushed onto it. The plaster die immediately absorbs the liquid from the slip, leaving an almost dry layer of densely packed particles on the die.A scalpel is used to sculpture this layer to the desired shape of the substructure

The plaster die is fired with the substructure, at 1120 degrees C, in a VITA Inceramat furnace. The plaster shrinks during firing and releases itself from the substructure, without leaving any residue. After firing the substructure will have retained its original size and remain loosely on the plaster die, which is now smaller. As the extremely dense ceramic oxide particles only slightly adhere to one another during the sintering, no detrimental shrinkage occurs, and the sintered substructure fits the master model perfectly. To achieve the high flexural strength, the outer surface of the substructure is coated with a mixture of water and glass powder and fired at 1100 degrees C.This so-called infiltration firing completely soaks the sintered substructure with molten glass, resulting in a fine grained structure with an optimum glass matrix. The high strength values stem from this homogenous structure.

The excess glass remaining on the substructure after the infiltration firing, is ground or micro-blasted off. The restoration is then built up with VITADUR N dentines and enamels, and fired using the VITADUR firing cycles.
